The excitement around real estate in Canada is alive and well as we head into 2026! According to Wahi.com’s third annual Homebuyer Intentions Survey, Canadians—especially millennials—are showing strong interest in purchasing homes despite ongoing economic uncertainties.
Millennials Take the Lead
The survey reveals that 25% of millennials are likely to buy a home this year, up slightly from 23% in 2025. Overall, homebuying intentions among all Canadians aged 18 and older remain steady at 17%. This shows that even with concerns around affordability, job security, and trade issues, Canadians are motivated to take steps toward homeownership.
Gen Z buyers are also stepping into the market, with 15% planning to purchase a home this year, while Gen X remains steady at 18%. Baby boomers are joining in too, with 10% considering a property purchase in 2026. These numbers highlight a positive trend: Canadians across generations are actively planning their next move in real estate.
Strong Interest in All Corners of the Country
Even in provinces with high living costs, homebuying intentions remain robust:
- In B.C., 20% of residents are considering buying a home, encouraged by recent price adjustments in the market.
- Alberta sees 17% of residents looking to buy, reflecting continued affordability in major cities.
- Ontario has 16% of Canadians planning a purchase this year, steady from last year despite a competitive market.
These stats show that Canadians are seizing opportunities, even in markets that have traditionally been seen as expensive.
Overcoming Barriers and Embracing Opportunities
The survey also points out that financial uncertainty is a top concern for some buyers, with 29% citing it as a potential barrier. The good news? More favorable borrowing conditions—thanks to recent Bank of Canada rate cuts—are making mortgages more accessible and helping prospective buyers move forward with confidence.
Additionally, while 52% of buyers say they may wait to see how home prices move, this careful planning shows that Canadians are approaching homeownership strategically.
